-         Breeding Properties:

Aurora, known also as Super Styrian, is a diploid hybrid between Northern Brewer and a TG seedling of unknown origin. It is a medium early variety, its optimal picking time in Slovenia being between August 23th and 30th. The plants exhibit a cylindrical form of medium width, the lateral shoots being 60 cm long; they sprout also in the lower part of the plant. The vines are slightly purple, of medium thickness, with short internodes. The leaves are smooth and of medium size, their edges tend to become dry under unfavourable conditions. The rootstock is slightly susceptible to downy mildew, the leaves are resistant and the cones slightly susceptible. It is sensitive to aphids. The expected yield is about 2200 kg/ha. It has a fibrous root system. It is grown on moderately deep clay soil; it can thrive also on loamy clay soil. It is grown in Slovenia, Austria and Hungary. Medium planting distance is required. The recommended pruning time in Slovenia is between March 25th and April 5th. An average cone is 25 mm long and the average weight of 100 dry cones is 15 g. They are dense, of deep green colour and do not get shattered when picked by a picking machine. The drying temperature does not exceed 65 ° C.

-         Characteristic Ingredients and Brewing Quality:

Aurora has an intense and pleasant hoppy aroma. It contains 7 – 9.5 % of α - acids (22 - 26 % of cohumulone). The ratio between α - and β - acids is about 2.7. The essential oil content varies from 0.9 to 1.6 % of dry hops. The ratio between α - humulene and β - caryophyllene in the essential oil is about 3.2. Aurora has very good storage stability. Beer prepared with this variety has good organoleptical scores. The yield of α - acids is very good when brewing with this variety. Aurora is very suitable for extraction and combination with other varieties in the brewing process.
