STYRIAN ATLAS

-         Breeding Properties:

Atlas is a diploid hybrid between Brewers Gold and 3/3 Slovenian wild hop. It is a medium late variety, its optimal picking time in Slovenia being between September 1th and 6th. It is prone to monoecism. The plants have a form of a wide cylinder or basket, the lateral shoots are 100 cm long, the rough, green vines are of medium thickness, the (up to 7-fold) palmated leaves are of yellowish green colour and tend to turn yellow under unfavourable conditions. The rootstock is susceptible to downy mildew, the leaves are slightly susceptible, the cones susceptible. Atlas is susceptible to powdery mildew, but it is not excessively sensitive to aphids. Atlas has resistance on verticillium wilt. The expected yield is about 2000 kg/ha. The variety has strong skeleton roots, so it can be grown also on shallow sandy soil. It can not stand poorly drained or poorly aerated soil. It is grown in Slovenia and Austria. Large planting distance is required. The recommended pruning time in Slovenia is between April 1th and 10th. An average cone is 30 mm long and the average weight of 100 dry cones is 16 g. They are dense, of greenish yellow colour and do not get shattered when picked by a picking machine. The drying temperature does not exceed 65 ° C.

-         Characteristic Ingredients and Brewing Quality:

Atlas has a fresh hoppy aroma. It contains 7 – 10.9 % of α - acids (36 - 38% of cohumulone). The ratio between α - and β - acids is about 2.7. The essential oil content varies from 0.9 to 3.0 % of dry hops. The ratio between α - humulene and β - caryophyllene in the essential oil is about 2.6. Atlas has medium to low storage stability. Beer prepared with this variety has moderate organoleptical scores. The yield of α - acids is very good when brewing with this variety. Atlas belongs to bitter hops.
